A house in Coppenbrügge where Peter I stayed
Peter I and the Grand Embassy stayed in Coppenbrügge twice: from July 27 / August 6 to July 28 / August 6, 1697 on their way to Amsterdam and then from May 26 / June 5 to May 27 / June 6, 1698 on their way from Amsterdam to Vienna. In the Coppenbrügge castle on the night between August 6 and August 7 (according to the Gregorian calendar), 1697, Peter met Electresses Sophia of Hanover (Sophie von Hannover) and her daughter Sophia Charlotte of Brandenburg (Sophie Charlotte von Brandenburg). At that time, the town belonged to the House of Nassau-Dietz.
Peter I stayed in a peasant house in a village behind the castle. He arrived there at about 8 o’clock in the evening. The Grand Embassy members stayed in the Coppenbrügge castle. A chamberlain sent to the Tsar from the castle brought an invitation to a dinner.
Village houses are well seen on an engraving dating from 1654, as there were no other buildings but only fields around (Please see: Zar Peter der Große 1697 in Coppenbrügge. Festschrift zum 300jährigen Jubiläum am 6./7. September 1997 / Museum in der Burg Coppenbrügge. Coppenbrügge: Flecken Coppenbrügge. P. 37). According to the legend, it was a plot near the crossing of the streets Dammstraße, Osterstraße and Brunnerstraße, at the location of No. 36 Osterstraße street. Now, there is a new building on the site that was built in the second half of the 20th century.
